Asthma Hospitalizations: Patient and Physician Perspectives

The prevalence of asthma has risen rapidly over the past 30 years, and asthma hospitalizations are a major problem in Detroit, with rates 5 – 7 times higher than the target rates reported by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Understanding patient and physician perspectives about the challenges in asthma management is an important step toward reducing these costly and serious acute episodes.

Under the direction of CMCD-affiliated investigator, Alan Baptist, MD, the goal of this project was to develop a deeper understanding of exacerbating factors, barriers to care, and attitudes towards asthma self-management among hospitalized adults with asthma. Both patients and their physicians were surveyed regarding the main causes of hospitalization.
